9 Mix Analyzers Compared by an Engineer Who Built One

There are two completely different products being sold under the word “AI mixing” in 2026, and in my experience picking the wrong one is where most people waste their money here. One kind takes your track and mixes it for you. The other changes nothing about your audio and instead tells you what is wrong with it, so you make the moves yourself. This article is about the second kind.

That difference is why so many people try an automatic mixer, hear that it still sounds like their mix, and conclude AI audio does not work. It usually did work — it just processed a balance problem louder. What a feedback tool sells instead is a second set of ears that never gets tired and never tells you it sounds great to avoid the conversation.

Numbered for reference, not ranked best to worst. Tools 1–2 give guidance in your session, 3–8 analyse a bounce in a browser, and 9 is the baseline everything else has to beat.

First, What Any of These Can Actually Know

Every tool below publishes a list of things it analyses, and those lists all look impressive and roughly identical. What none of them separate is the difference between a number that was measured and a judgement that was inferred from that number. That distinction is the single most useful thing to hold in your head while reading any mix report, so here it is before the tools.

Two rows there should change how you shop. The first is masking. A tool can compute a psychoacoustic masking estimate on a summed signal, but masking that matters to you is one element covering another, and a bounced stereo file cannot be un-summed back into elements. So when a report says the guitars are covering your vocal, it did not measure that. It inferred it from a hot band plus a model listening. The inference is often right and it is still not a measurement, and a tool that blurs the two trains you to trust it exactly where it is weakest. The workaround costs one extra bounce: upload the stem and the instrumental separately and the relationship becomes observable.

The second is performance and tuning. No meter hears intonation, timing, or whether a take is any good. That is worth sitting with, because the RoEx study below could only measure the technical layer — a dataset of loudness and phase readings has nothing to say about whether the vocal was sung well, which is my own candidate for what most often gives an amateur record away. It is also the thing this entire product category is structurally worst at. If your mix measures clean and still sounds wrong, the tools below are close to the end of their usefulness and you need a human.

1. MixingGPT — A Full Engineer’s Report, Not a Metering Readout

Disclosure: I built this one. MixingGPT is a plugin that loads on a channel or bus inside your session as AU or VST3, on macOS and Windows. Where most of this list hands you a dashboard, MixingGPT writes the report an engineer would write after a listening pass: executive summary, assessment scorecard, priority fixes in adaptive tiers, a section-by-section diagnosis, a translation read, and three sections nothing else here attempts.

Translation maps where each problem actually surfaces — headphones, phone, car, club, monitors, mono — instead of leaving you to guess. Leave Alone names what already works and says not to touch it, the only anti-overmixing feature in this article. Taste Options lays out competing directions with the trade-off each one costs. Every finding carries the same five fields: problem, evidence, impact, move, and the check that confirms it worked.

Underneath, it runs on two layers. The measured layer — loudness, true peak, dynamics, stereo correlation, six-band spectral balance — is scored against per-genre targets rather than one universal curve, and checked against every genre at once. The heard layer covers what no meter reaches: a boxed-in vocal, a chorus that does not lift, a top end that fatigues. Findings are tagged technical issue, translation issue, genre convention or artistic option, and argued with different firmness accordingly — the measured-versus-inferred split this article opened with, built into the product.

And you can question any of it. A static report cannot answer “why”.

Best for: producers who want the full picture in one pass — the reasoning, not just the numbers. Also the pick if scores have burned you before, since it is the only one here whose internals I can vouch for directly.

Where it falls short: no Pro Tools build — AU and VST3 only, so if you work in Pro Tools, see EchoJay instead. Reason is also unsupported. Supported DAWs: Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Studio One, Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Bitwig, GarageBand. Not supported: Pro Tools and Reason.

Pricing: audio bills by decoded duration at 4 credits per started minute, so a 5-minute full critique costs 20 credits and a 30-second stem check costs 4. Free is 15 credits a month shared across chat, images and audio. Starter at $9 is 75 credits, roughly 18 minutes of audio. Pro at $19 is 200 credits, about 10 full critiques. Studio at $49 is 600 credits, about 30. Credits do not roll over.

The honest read: if you work in Pro Tools, stop here and use EchoJay. If you want a machine to finish the track, this is the wrong tool and I would rather tell you now. If you want to understand your own mix well enough that you need the tool less over time, that is what it was built for, and the free tier is enough to find out whether the reports are useful to you before any money changes hands.

2. EchoJay — The Closest Direct Rival, and the One With AAX

EchoJay is the tool most similar to mine, and it is good. It runs both as a browser app and as a VST3/AU/AAX plugin sharing one account, and it leads with real-time metering: EBU R128 loudness with proper K-weighting and gating, 4× oversampled true peak, crest factor, DC offset, stereo width and correlation, a vectorscope, and an 8-band average spectrum rendered as an EQ curve. Those meter values travel with every question you ask, so the chat is grounded in your actual signal rather than in impressions.

The features worth pointing at: reference-track comparison that overlays a commercial track’s curve against yours, AI Compare across up to eight tracks for album consistency, revision tracking that detects V2 after V1 and reports what changed, and channel-type detection that calls you out if you route a full mix through a setting labelled lead vocal. It also builds plugin chains using only the plugins you own, with specific Hz, dB, ms and ratio values.

Best for: Pro Tools users, since it is the only tool here with an AAX build, and anyone who wants live meters they can watch move rather than a report on a finished bounce.

Where it falls short: the AAX build is macOS only, so Windows Pro Tools users are still stuck. Its usage model counts AI messages rather than audio duration, which cuts the opposite way to ours — predictable if you analyse long files, restrictive if you like to ask a lot of follow-ups, and 15 messages a month on free disappears quickly in a real conversation. Audio storage and cross-device sync are Pro-only.

Pricing: Free gives the full metering suite and 15 AI messages a month with no audio storage. Pro is $9.99 a month for 200 messages, audio replay and storage, cross-device sync and album compare. Studio is $19.99 a month for 400 messages, plus personalised setup, client mix notes and priority responses. Annual billing is advertised as two months free, and credit packs are available on the paid tiers.

The honest read: this is the one I would send you to if MixingGPT does not fit, and the AAX build is a real advantage I do not have. Choose on the metering model: EchoJay is stronger if you want to watch numbers in real time while you push faders, and message-metering suits people who ask a few precise questions rather than working through a long diagnosis. 3. RoEx Mix Check Studio — The Best Genuinely Free Second Opinion

RoEx’s Mix Check Studio is the tool I recommend most often to people who do not want to sign up for anything. You drag in a WAV, FLAC or MP3 up to 173 MB, pick a genre, and get a report covering EQ balance across frequency bands, dynamic range and compression levels, integrated loudness relative to streaming targets, stereo width and imaging, and tonal profile. The genre selection genuinely changes the analysis, spanning electronic and hip-hop through rock, jazz and orchestral. No account is needed for the free check.

What sets it apart is that RoEx published their aggregate findings through peer review rather than as marketing. “Exploring trends in audio mixes and masters” was presented at the Audio Engineering Society’s 157th Convention in New York, analysing tracks submitted to Mix Check Studio across 30 genres. The numbers are the most useful prevalence data in this whole article: 46% of mixes under-compressed, 79% of masters louder than Spotify’s −14 LUFS recommendation and 92% louder than Apple Music’s −16, clipping in 31% of mixes and 57% of masters, phase issues in 16% of mixes, and mono-compatibility problems in 17%. Mix Check Studio was also named in MusicRadar’s most innovative products of 2023.

One caveat, since I checked and it is worth knowing. RoEx quote different dataset sizes for those same percentages on different pages: the write-up describing the research says over 200,000 tracks, while a later page attributes the identical figures to 7 million, which is their throughput across all products rather than the research sample. The percentages are the peer-reviewed part and the ones I would rely on; treat the headline dataset size as marketing. Separately, the platform counter has moved from 550,000 tracks in 2023 to over 1.1 million today, which is a genuine measure of adoption and a different claim from the study.

Best for: a fast, free, no-signup technical pass on a finished bounce, and for sanity-checking whatever a paid tool told you.

Where it falls short: it is a report, not a conversation. You cannot ask it what it meant, push back on a finding, or get the reasoning behind a recommendation, and that ceiling is exactly where the in-DAW tools start earning their subscription. The upsell path is toward Mastering+ processing rather than deeper diagnosis, which is a different product than the one you came for.

Pricing: the Check feature is free for everyone. Studio Pro is a monthly subscription that unlocks unlimited Mastering+ downloads.

The honest read: run every mix through this before you pay anyone anything, including me. It costs nothing, and if it comes back clean on loudness, dynamics and stereo you have eliminated the boring problems and can spend your money on the interesting ones.

4. Mix Analyzer (Mixanalytic) — The Widest Measurement Surface

Mix Analyzer is the most measurement-dense tool here, advertising 21 analysis modules: a 7-band frequency spectrum, dynamic range, loudness and true peak, stereo field with phase correlation and mid/side balance, clarity via spectral contrast, transient attack and density, 3D spatial depth, mono and surround compatibility, separate headphone and speaker translation scoring, noise and artefact detection, source-quality checks, reference matching, genre classification, vocal presence, instrument detection, mood classification and semantic tagging. It reports a score out of 100 with sub-scores for clarity, dynamics and transients.

Two features stand out as genuinely differentiated. Side-by-side comparison lets you upload your mix and a reference and get actionable deltas across every dimension rather than two separate reports you have to diff yourself. And the Studio Profile lets you list the EQs, compressors, reverbs and saturators you actually own, after which recommendations map to your real chain instead of a generic plugin bundle. They also recently added an AI-origin detector that flags whether a track may be AI-generated, which is an unusual thing to find bolted to a mix analyzer but says something about where 2026 is. The site reports 31,410+ tracks analysed and 7,796+ registered users, with a 4.6 average across 84 reviews.

Best for: producers who want the deepest measurement readout available without installing anything, and anyone who works reference-first.

Where it falls short: two full analyses a month on the free tier is tight if you iterate, and 21 modules is more information than most mixes need — mood classification and semantic tagging are discovery-metadata features, not mixing features, and their presence inflates the module count past the point of usefulness. Plugin-aware advice requires the paid tier even though saving the profile is free.

Pricing: free accounts get 2 full analyses per month with no card required, and uploaded audio is removed after processing. The Supporter tier raises that to 30 full analyses per month and activates preview-model access and plugin-aware recommendations. API access exists but runs through a manual application queue.

The honest read: the reference-delta comparison is the reason to use this one, and it is a feature I would happily see more tools copy. Judge the module count on the eight or nine that relate to mixing decisions rather than on the marketing total.

5. TrackScore.AI — Best for Electronic Producers Tracking Revisions

TrackScore is built specifically for electronic music and does not pretend otherwise, which is a strength. Its DSP engine extracts 40+ features across rhythm, spectrum, dynamics and structure, and it is unusually transparent about the foundations: librosa for feature extraction, Essentia for music analysis, pyloudnorm for EBU R128 loudness, NumPy and SciPy for signal processing. Naming your libraries is a meaningful trust signal in a category full of unexplained proprietary scores.

You get scores across frequency balance, mix quality, danceability, structural analysis with intro/build/drop/breakdown detection, hit potential and tonal profile, plus written feedback from a persona called Klaus you can question conversationally. The standout is Bounce Check: upload a new version and it reports score deltas per metric, tracks each previously-flagged issue as resolved, improved, unchanged or regressed, and gives you a prioritised list for next session. It reads across your saved history too, so you can ask whether your low end is improving over a run of tracks rather than one bounce. Audio is processed in memory and discarded, and they state they never train on your music.

Best for: electronic producers who bounce many revisions and want to know objectively whether last week’s changes helped.

Where it falls short: the genre focus is a hard boundary — if you mix rock, jazz, folk or singer-songwriter material, the danceability and structural scoring is measuring things that do not apply to you. And “hit potential” is the least defensible metric anywhere in this article. Predicting commercial performance from audio features is an open research problem, not a solved measurement — the academic attempts at it report modest accuracy at best, and none of them work from a waveform alone. A composite weighted by genre trends is a guess with a number attached. Ignore that pillar and the rest of the tool is solid.

Pricing: every new account gets one free analysis. Single analyses are $2.99, credit packs are sold in 3- and 10-analysis bundles that never expire, and monthly plans go up to 20 analyses per month with credits rolling over up to 60, plus batch analysis, a custom reference library and API access on the top tier.

The honest read: the pay-per-track option at $2.99 makes this the cheapest way to get a genuine second opinion on one specific track without a subscription, and revision tracking is the feature most likely to actually change your habits. Treat hit potential as entertainment.

6. MusicProdAI — Cheapest Unlimited, With DAW-Exact Instructions

MusicProdAI’s good idea is that advice you cannot execute is worthless. You tell it which DAW you are in, and every recommendation is written using that software’s actual menus and stock plugins, so a fix reads like “low shelf at 50 Hz in Mixer” rather than a generic instruction you then have to translate. It supports 10+ DAWs and reads real audio data: RMS loudness, peak levels, stereo width and a 7-band frequency breakdown, with BPM detection. Scores come back for mix balance, commercial readiness and genre accuracy, calibrated per genre, in under 30 seconds.

It splits into three tools rather than one report: Track Feedback scores the mix, Creative Unblocking gives direction when you are stuck, and AI Listener suggests what the arrangement is missing. You can run one or all three, and follow-up questions reference your actual track data.

Best for: beginners and anyone on a tight budget who wants unlimited analyses, and specifically for people who read a good report and then do not know which menu to open.

Where it falls short: the measurement set is the lightest of the dedicated tools here. RMS and peak rather than integrated LUFS and true peak is a meaningful step down for streaming compliance work, and a 7-band spectrum is coarse next to what Mix Analyzer or EchoJay give you. Full dB spectrum, LUFS targets and timestamped clipping analysis all sit behind the paid tier, which means the free tier is missing the measurements that matter most for release readiness.

Pricing: free gives 2 track analyses per week with all three tools and 3 follow-up questions each. Pro is £5 a month for unlimited analyses and follow-ups, full dB spectrum, a waveform player, timestamped clipping and energy analysis, streaming LUFS targets and PDF export.

The honest read: £5 for unlimited is the best raw value in this article, and the DAW-specific phrasing is a genuinely good idea that the more expensive tools should copy. Just know you are buying actionability rather than measurement depth — if you need to certify a master for streaming, use something that reports true peak and integrated LUFS on the free tier.

7. RoastYourMix — Blunt Feedback, Plus a Human Tier

RoastYourMix takes the position that encouragement is why your mix is not improving. It returns a health score out of 100, a verdict, and specifically-worded issues with fixes, in 10 to 30 seconds. Underneath the attitude the pipeline is conventional and openly described — an ffmpeg chain doing stereo/mid-side conversion, statistics and phase metering — covering frequency balance with the exact offending band identified, dynamic range against comparisons, stereo image and correlation, mono compatibility, and muddiness and harshness detection. Accepted formats are WAV, AIFF, MP3 and FLAC up to 150 MB, with no signup for the free tier.

The genuinely distinctive thing is the human option. Alongside the automated tiers there is a Mix Fix service where an actual engineer works on your track and delivers within 24 hours, including one revision. That makes it the only entry here that spans both sides of the AI-versus-human question.

Best for: producers who have learned to discount polite feedback, and anyone who wants an escalation path from automated analysis to a human without changing vendor.

Where it falls short: the tone is the product, and that has a cost. Told your drums sound like “cardboard boxes having a midlife crisis”, you have to work to extract which band and which fix, and a reader who finds the framing grating will disengage from advice that was technically correct. At $19.99 a month it is also priced level with EchoJay’s Studio tier while giving you a metered allowance of deep reports rather than a metering suite and a plugin.

Pricing: free roasts stay free with no card. The Producer subscription is $19.99 a month or $199 a year, including unlimited quick roasts, 15 deep web reports and 3 PDF exports monthly, and genre-specific targets. A one-off pro report is available at $19.99 without a subscription and is yours permanently. Credits reset each cycle and do not roll over. Files are deleted immediately on the automated tiers and after 30 days on Mix Fix.

The honest read: the one-time pro report is the smart purchase here — same price as a month of the subscription, and you keep it. Take the subscription only if you genuinely bounce revisions weekly, and take the Mix Fix tier if what you actually wanted all along was a human.

8. UpTrack — When the Real Question Is “Is This Signable?”

UpTrack scores your mix in about 60 seconds across five categories — loudness, frequency, stereo, structure and rhythm — calibrated across 16 electronic styles, then does something none of the others do: it matches the track to 600+ electronic labels filtered by genre, BPM and release-readiness, with verified demo contacts and stated A&R criteria. For tracks that cannot be signed, edits, bootlegs and free downloads, it matches to SoundCloud repost networks and YouTube channels instead.

The fixes are specific in the way that matters. Their own example reads “cut 2 dB at 250 Hz on the bass — kick fundamental is being masked” rather than “boost the highs”, and structural advice extends to arrangement decisions like intro length for DJ mixing. Their framing of why the score exists is refreshingly honest: the score is a pre-filter that justifies the label match, because A&R will not listen past the first ten seconds if the loudness is wrong. Files accepted up to 200 MB and auto-deleted after 7 days.

Best for: electronic producers whose actual goal is a demo submission rather than self-improvement, and who would rather pay once a year than monthly.

Where it falls short: five scoring categories is the shallowest analysis of any dedicated tool here, because analysis is not really the product — the label directory is. There is no true-peak or crest-factor reporting surfaced, no reference comparison, and no conversational layer. If you are not making electronic music it is close to useless, and if you are not trying to get signed you are paying for a directory you will not open.

Pricing: 5 free analyses on signup with no card. After that it is €49 a year for unlimited analyses and label matches, explicitly unmetered, with no per-track charges.

The honest read: judge this as a demo-submission tool with analysis attached, not as a mix analyzer with a bonus directory, and at that job it is priced very reasonably. Pair it with a deeper analyzer — clear your technical flags elsewhere, then use UpTrack to decide where the finished track goes.

9. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini — The Baseline Everything Must Beat

You almost certainly already pay for one of these, so it belongs in the comparison. And for a real set of jobs it is the correct tool: explaining what peak-to-loudness ratio means, talking through why parallel compression works, planning a vocal chain, or interpreting numbers you measured somewhere else. For understanding concepts, a frontier model is excellent and free.

The limitation is precise and it is the whole reason this category exists. A general assistant given an audio file describes it rather than measures it. There is no integrated LUFS value, no true-peak reading, no crest factor, no correlation coefficient — because it is working from a tokenised representation, not from a meter. What comes back tends toward the confidently generic: strong rhythmic foundation, vocals sit nicely, maybe try some compression on the drum bus. That is fine for ideas and actively misleading for decisions, because it reads like measurement and is not. The failure mode that costs you real time is when it invents a specific frequency, because a number stated confidently is far more likely to send you carving into a band that was never the problem.

Best for: theory, terminology, planning, and interpreting a report a measuring tool already produced.

Where it falls short: no measurement layer at all, no session context, no memory of your previous bounces, and no way for you to tell whether a stated frequency came from your file or from its training data.

Pricing: capable free tiers across all three, with paid tiers around $20 a month — roughly the same as the mid tier of most tools above.

The honest read: keep using it for the conceptual half and stop asking it to judge audio. The useful combination is a measuring tool for the numbers and a frontier model for the education. How to Choose: Six Scenarios

Rather than declare a winner that cannot exist, here is what I would actually tell someone depending on what they said next.

“I have no budget and one mix to check.” RoEx Mix Check Studio, no signup needed. Then run the same file through Mix Analyzer’s free tier and compare. Where two independent tools agree you have a real problem; where they disagree you have found the limit of what a bounce can tell anyone.

“I work in Pro Tools.” EchoJay, and only EchoJay, since it is the sole AAX build here — on macOS. On Windows Pro Tools you are limited to the browser tools regardless of what you would prefer.

“I want to stop leaving my session.” MixingGPT or EchoJay, and they are genuinely different products. EchoJay is live meters you watch move while you push faders, with chat attached. MixingGPT is a full written critique of a bounce — priority fixes, translation, what to leave alone — that you then interrogate. Pick the first if you want instrumentation, the second if you want a verdict and a plan. Billing follows the same split: message-metered versus audio-duration-metered.

“I bounce three revisions a week and want to know if I am improving.” TrackScore for electronic music, because Bounce Check explicitly tracks whether each flagged issue was resolved. Mix Analyzer’s side-by-side comparison is the genre-agnostic equivalent.

“I read the report and do not know what to click.” MusicProdAI at £5 a month, for DAW-exact instructions and unlimited runs.

“I want the track finished, not diagnosed.” None of these. You want automatic mixing or mastering, which is a different product category — see our comparisons of AI mastering plugins and AI mastering services. Be aware that processing a mix with a balance problem produces a louder mix with a balance problem.

How This Comparison Was Done, and What I Did Not Test

Being specific matters more than usual here, because I compete with eight of the nine entries.
